Sophie Walker (born 27 May 1971, Blackpool)[2][3] is the current leader of the UK's Women's Equality Party,[4][5] and was the party's candidate in the London mayoral election held on 5 May 2016. Walker finished sixth, polling (first and second preference combined total) with over 250,000 votes (George Galloway and Britain First were last).[6] Walker was the unanimous choice of the steering committee and will remain as Leader until the the leadership election in 2017.[7]

Previous career

Walker previously worked as a reporter and an editor at Reuters. In her work as a journalist she has written on business, politics and trade in Paris, Washington and London and from Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.[5] She writes a blog about being the mother of a daughter with Asperger's syndrome,[8] which was published as a book, Grace Under Pressure.[9] She was also given an advocacy role with the National Autistic Society.[7]

Women's Equality Party

Walker told BBC Radio Wales Sunday Supplement programme that the party would be taking a non-partisan approach to elections, "We will be undertaking consultations with our members and deciding which seats to target."[10] Walker launched the party's policy at Conway Hall, 20 October 2015.[11][12]

London mayoral election, 2016

Walker stood for election in the London mayoral election on 5 May 2016[13][14] polling over 250,000 votes.[6]

Personal life

Walker is married to Christopher Naylor, the chief executive officer of Barking and Dagenham council.[7]
