Socialism is an economic system based on the social ownership and control of the means of production; as well as a political and economic theory, ideology and movement that aims at the establishment of a socialist system.

• Scientific socialism, a method of analysis pioneered by Karl Marx and used to analyze capitalism, where capitalist development leads to the emergence of socialism; widely became known as Marxism in the late 19th century.
• Socialist mode of production, a more specific concept of socialist organization articulated by Marxist theory.
• Socialist party, a political party with "socialist" in its name, which may or may not adhere to the principles of socialism.
• Socialist state, a country governed by a socialist party with the constitutional aim of constructing socialism.
• Real socialism, a phrase used to refer to the Soviet-type planned economies in the former Soviet Union and Eastern bloc.
