Skyline High School is a comprehensive public high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The school opened in Fall 2008 with the intention to relieve overcrowding of the two existing high schools, Huron High School and Pioneer High School. An annual lottery is held allowing those living outside the Skyline district boundaries to attend the school. There is also a lottery for Skyline students to get into one of the school's four magnet programs. The school runs on a trimester schedule with 12 weeks in each trimester.
Skyline's first graduating class was in the 2011-2012 school year.
Magnet programs and stuffs
Business, Marketing & Information Technology (BMIT)
The BMIT magnet is for those interested in commerce and economics. Students learn marketing and entrepreneurship, management of businesses and offices, as well as how to use technology for business.
Communication, Media & Public Policy (CMPP)
The CMPP magnet focuses on the topic of public policy and how it affects communities. Students research case studies and produce video on the topic of public policy.
Design, Technology & Environmental Planning (DTEP)
The DTEP magnet is catered to students interested in engineering and product design. Those enrolled will use computer-aided design (CAD) extensively for their projects.
Health & Medicine (H&M)
In the Health & Medicine magnet, students learn college level science and receive college credits for the course. They perform organ dissections, DNA electrophoresis, polymerase chain reactions, bacterial growth, and various other experiments. It also features an industrial-grade autoclave.
Small Learning Communities
Four Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) act as "home base" for students for four years, grades 9 through 12. Each of the four SLCs are named Integrity, Diversity, (Academic) Innovation, and Equality, each with its own color. Administrators, counselors, teachers, and support personnel are attached to each learning community, promoting common planning, teacher interaction, and positive relationships between teachers and students.
Building
The building was funded by public consent with a bond issue. The architects were TMP Architecture, Inc. The builder was Granger Construction Company. The building was awarded LEED-NC Silver certification in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Counsel. Implementation of LEED practices provided reduced facility operating costs, a healthier environment, and conservation of natural resources. Skyline High School benefits from a geothermal heating and cooling system. This system, consisting of approximately 80 miles (130 km) of PVC pipes buried 5–7 feet (1.5–2.1 m) deep, uses the earth’s core temperature to regulate building comfort.
Extracurricular and Electives
Skyline High School has several clubs and programs outside of school. Offerings include the nationally-ranked Skyline Quiz Bowl team, the Skyline Science Olympiad team, National Honor Society, Junior State of America, a FIRST Robotics team, and more. The school also has various music, theatre, visual arts and athletic electives to help fulfill graduation requirements.
Sports
Skyline offers many of the standard sports teams. They also have an equestrian team and a bowling team. The Skyline Soccer program won its first state championship in fall 2013. Both The Skyline Men's Water Polo team and Women's won their first state championships in 2015. The Skyline Women's swim and Dive team won its first state championship in the fall of 2015. The skyline crew team received its first national title in 2013.
Music Programs
Skyline High School currently has 3 bands, 3 orchestras, and 3 choirs. There is also a drum line and marching band which anyone can join granted they play a musical instrument. One can also take a guitar, piano, or music theory class as an art credit through the music program.
