The Remote is designed specifically to work with the always-on Siri capable Apple TV. The device is a successor of the original Apple Remote.

The Siri Remote is distinguished by a trackpad covering the upper third of the remote. The Touch surface allows for clicking, swiping in either of four directions for navigation, and tilting the trackpad button in any direction to "tilt" buttons in the interface.
