Shannon Stubbs (born December 8, 1979) is a Canadian politician who was elected to represent the riding of Lakeland in the House of Commons of Canada in the Canadian federal election, 2015.[1]

Early life

Stubbs was born near Chipman, Alberta in 1979.[2] She is the granddaughter of Eileen Stubbs, a former mayor of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.[3]

Political career

Provincial politics

Stubbs ran in the 2004 Alberta election for the governing Progressive Conservatives against Raj Pannu in Edmonton-Strathcona, which he held by a large margin. She later left the party and became involved with the Wildrose Party, serving as Danielle Smith's chief of staff from 2010-2012.[4]

She ran for Wildrose in the riding of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville in the 2012 Alberta election. She won the Wildrose nomination when Ed Stelmach was premier and local MLA in the hope of unseating him.[5] However, despite his resignation, the riding was won by PC candidate and former Strathcona County councillor Jacquie Fenske. In the same election, her fiancé Shayne Saskiw was elected for Wildrose in neighbouring Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills.

Federal politics

Stubbs won the Conservative Party nomination for the newly-recreated riding of Lakeland in 2015, and subsequently won the riding by a landslide. Conservative interim leader Rona Ambrose appointed her deputy critic for natural resources,[6] and she therefore serves on parliament's Standing Committee on Natural Resources.[7] She also serves as vice-chair for the Special Committee on Pay Equity.[8]
