Shannon James Augare is a Democrat member of the Montana Legislature. He was elected for Senate District 8 in 2010. Previously, he served the Montana House of Representatives, representing District 16 from 2007 until the end of 2010.[1]

One of Montana’s most influential leaders, Senator Shannon James Augare (Enrolled Blackfeet Indian of Montana) was inaugurated into the Montana Senate in January of 2010. During this same election cycle, Senator Augare was also elected to the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council whereby holding two separate elective offices for two separate governments. Throughout his time in the Montana Legislature, Senator Augare has held various leadership positions, including his service as Majority Whip in the Montana House of Representatives and Chairman of the Joint Committee of Law and Justice. In his more than decade of public service career, he has earned a national reputation in economic development strategies for rural-America and the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle for his longstanding and award winning efforts in family asset building and community planning. Senator Augare has served as special envoy for then Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer’s government / industry trade mission to six western states promoting Montana’s wind energy resource.

Senator Augare lived and governed in a tough times that faced rural-America and native-America. He has unique experience clearing a path for good paying green jobs, programmatic infrastructure development, and community planning. Beginning in 2004, while directing a multi-state (Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming), 19 tribal nation regional planning project, Senator Augare began bringing various elected officials and concerned citizens together to discuss and create landmark public policy measures that support community infrastructure development. He is credited with creating a model of building sustainable partnerships and family asset building programs. Senator Augare worked in concert with former Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, current Governor Steve Bullock, former US Senator Max Baucus (who serves now as US Ambassador to China), current US Senators Jon Tester, and Steve Daines to spark creative economic development projects on local, state, and national levels. Former US Senator Max Baucus, then chairman of the powerful US Senate Finance Committee, appointed Senator Augare to serve on the United States / Thailand Trade Negotiations taskforce to ensure trade opportunities were promoted for Indian Country throughout the United States. Former Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer appointed Senator Augare to serve on the Montana Board of Crime Control and later the Family Economic Security Council. In 2007, and again in 2010 and 2013, Montana Supreme Court Chief Justice Mike McGrath appointed Senator Augare to serve on the Equal Justice Taskforce for Montana.

Senator Augare has previously served as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, Senate Local Government Committee, Senate Agriculture and Irrigation Committee and Legislative Administrative Committee. While serving in the Montana House of Representatives, he served on the Business and Labor Committee, Federal Relations, Energy, and Telecommunications Committee, Agriculture Committee and Rules Committee. Senator Augare is a former member of the National Community Tax Coalition; a coalition of national tax experts. Senator Augare also served as Chairman of the National Caucus of Native American State Legislators. He serves on the Energy and Agricultural Standing Committee and Criminal Justice Standing Committee for the National Conference of State Legislators. Since early in his public service, Senator Augare has traveled to almost every state in the nation giving speeches or meeting directly with state officials sharing the hopeful stories of economic development in rural-America and native-America.

Senator Augare continues to be active in service to his community, state, and nation. In July of 2016, Senator Augare was accepted by His Excellency, The Most Revered George Leo Thomas, US Catholic Bishop of the Helena Diocese as a Seminarian. In August of 2016, Senator Augare entered seminary life at Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon.
