Secaucus High School is a four-year comprehensive public high school that serves students in ninth through twelfth grade from Secaucus, in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States, operating as the lone secondary school of the Secaucus Board of Education. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Secondary Schools since 1928.[3] Since 2010, the school has improved its academic ratings. Students are able to compete in interscholastic sporting events, and one of the school's teams won multiple state championships in the 2000s.

As of the 2013-14 school year, the school had an enrollment of 551 students and 52.3 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.5:1. There were 131 students (23.8% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 46 (8.3% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[1]

Awards, recognition and rankings

The school was the 155th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 339 schools statewide in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2014 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools", using a new ranking methodology.[4] The school had been ranked 90th in the state of 328 schools in 2012, after being ranked 102nd in 2010 out of 322 schools listed.[5] The magazine ranked the school 103rd in 2008 out of 316 schools.[6] The school was ranked 107th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state.[7] Schooldigger.com ranked the school 215th out of 376 public high schools statewide in its 2010 rankings (a decrease of 34 positions from the 2009 rank) which were based on the combined percentage of students classified as proficient or above proficient on the language arts literacy and mathematics components of the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).[8]

Athletics

The Secaucus High School Patriots[2] compete in the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference, which includes private and public high schools located in Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson counties, following a reorganization of sports leagues in Northern New Jersey by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).[9] With 414 students in grades 10-12, the school was classified by the NJSIAA for the 2014-15 school year as North II, Group I for most athletic competition purposes, which included schools with an enrollment of 61 to 478 students in that grade range.[10] Prior to the realignment that took effect in the fall of 2010, Secaucus was a member of the Bergen County Scholastic League (BCSL) National Division.[11]

The girls volleyball team won the 2000 Group I state championship over Bogota High School, dropping the first match by a score of 10-15 and then winning the final two matches by scores of 15-13 and 15-9.[12] The 2001 team repeated with a win over Cresskill High School in the tournament final.[13] The team took the title in 2005 with a 25-20, 25-18 straight set win over Bogota High School.[14] The 2006 team repeated as Group I championship with a 25-13, 25-12 win in the finals vs. Midland Park High School.[15]

The 2013 girls softball team won the school's very first sectional championship, defeating defending state champion Whippany Park High School by a score of 1-0.[16]

Among the school's former faculty was Anthony Impreveduto (c. 1948-2009), a teacher who was the chairman of the school's business department as well as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1987-2004.[18]
