Satu Mare Airport (IATA: SUJ, ICAO: LRSM) is located in north west Romania, it is located 14 km (8.7 mi) south[1] of Satu Mare municipality and county. The airport is located in a "high density" airports area, with many airports on an 150 km (93 mi) radius (BAY, OMR, CLJ).

History

Satu Mare Airport has a long history, been one of the first airports in Romania, officially opened in 1936. The first plane that arrived to Satu Mare Airport was a Junkers 34 airplane, that operated the Cluj - Satu Mare - Oradea - Cluj route.

The current 2500 meters runway was inaugurated in 1975.

After it was declared an international airport, in June 1998 Satu Mare Airport welcomes the TAROM operated route between Bucharest - Satu Mare - New York and starting April 1999 the Bucharest - Satu Mare - Chicago route, operated with Airbus A310. Later, these routes were abandoned by TAROM.
