San Miguel High School is a private Catholic and Lasallian college and career preparatory school located on the south side of Tucson. San Miguel is a member of the Cristo Rey Network, a thriving association of 32 high schools that utilize an innovative work-study program to provide affordable, Catholic education to more than 9,000 students nationwide.

San Miguel exists solely to serve children from families with limited financial resources. Every student at San Miguel works five full days per month at one of more than 100 companies in Tucson, to pay for most of the cost of their education and to gain professional experience. By working, students learn about the corporate world, connect academic coursework to the work they do at their corporate placements, and gain skills that will serve them beyond high school.

At San Miguel, students take a full college preparatory course load while simultaneously holding internships, working in corporations and earning nearly forty percent of their school tuition. The Corporate Internship Program (CIP) at San Miguel gives students the opportunity to form new identities as citizens and professionals who have bright futures.

Approximately 80% of San Miguel students arrive two grade levels behind in math and reading. San Miguel's mission allows the school to accept those at-risk students and work with them to bridge that academic gap and build upon their strengths. The faculty is committed to guiding students to economic success using education as the foundation. Students with academic deficiencies are provided tutoring and other forms of academic support that build confidence and create broad-based understanding within subject areas.

San Miguel is dedicated to providing a college preparatory based curriculum that centers around community learning and student cooperation. A total of 24 credits are required for graduation, as is participation in the Corporate Internship program.

The Corporate Internship Program

San Miguel utilizes the corporate work-study model of the Cristo Rey Network. Consistent with this model, all San Miguel students take a full college preparatory course load while simultaneously holding professional internships, working in corporations and earning approximately 40% of the cost of their education. Every student works five days a month at entry-level professional positions and their schedules ensure that they do not miss any scheduled classes. Students work with one of our corporate partners. Students gain practical experience and marketable skills working in a variety of professional fields, including law offices, hospitals, banks, insurance agencies, automotive companies, and more. By the end of four years at San Miguel, our graduates are ready to enter a university environment with confidence in their educational preparedness and a determination to succeed in their chosen field.

Corporate partners

A corporate partner of San Miguel's Corporate Internship Program is a local business or organization who is committed to the education and workforce development of students. They can be small businesses, nonprofit organizations, or large corporations in any industry. San Miguel's partners provide San Miguel students with work experience that prepares them for success in the classroom and the workplace. Students' supervisors serve as mentors and open their eye to future possibilities.

There are currently over 100 corporate partners that employ San Miguel students as part of the Corporate Internship Program. A list of the corporate sponsors can be found on the website.[3]

Faculty

San Miguel High School is a community formed by teachers from different social, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds. The school is composed of 34 staff members and 29 teaching faculty, 50% of whom have earned master's degrees in their related fields of administration, teaching and counseling.

Book about the Cristo Rey Model

In January 2008, Loyola Press released a book entitled More than A Dream: How One School's Vision is Changing the World. The book, authored by G.R. Kearney, a writer and former volunteer teacher at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School (Chicago), documents the unlikely development of the Cristo Rey model and its remarkable success throughout the United States.
