Sander van Dijck (born November 26, 1990) commonly known by his stage name San Holo, is a Dutch DJ, composer, musician and record producer. He gained international recognition for his remix of Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode", which currently has over 100 million views on YouTube. He has released music on several record labels including Spinnin' Records, OWSLA, and Monstercat. He also founded bitbird, a label which has released one of his songs "Still Looking." San Holo's first EP, Cosmos, was released on September 18, 2014 and was in the Top 100 Electronic category of iTunes.

Background

Van Dijck studied music production at the Rotterdam Pop Academy.[1] He graduated in 2012.[1] Before he became a well-known DJ and producer, he was teaching children to play guitar. After years of working with bands, Van Dijck started ghost producing for some DJs of which some of the songs had a lot of plays that led him to think about going solo and creating the stage name, San Holo.[2]

History

2014: Heroic Recordings and Walt Disney Pictures

San Holo began making music in 2013 and began to gain attention in 2014, when he was signed by Heroic Recordings. His debut EP, Cosmos EP was released on September 18, 2014 and was in the Top 100 Electronic category of iTunes.

In November 2014, he released a remix of Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode", which has had over 100 million views on YouTube.

In September 2014, Walt Disney Pictures threatened a lawsuit against producer Sander van Dijck.[3] They thought his stage name San Holo was too similar to Han Solo, a character in the Star Wars movies.[3] Heroic Recordings label stated: "We are shocked by the instituted proceedings. That is very unfortunate for Sander. It should be clear that he has chosen his name for love of Star Wars. To interpret it in completely the opposite way is crazy. We find his latest release fantastic and hope that this will not stop him in his success as an artist."

2015: Monstercat and Spinnin' Records

On 4 May 2015, he released a song called "Victory" on Monstercat. On 25 May 2015, he also released a music video of his song "Hold Fast" in Monstercat; both songs become part of Monstercat's 22nd album titled Contact and San Holo's Victory EP, which is also from Monstercat.[4] On 4 September 2015, he released a video of his single with "Father Dude" called IMISSU on Spinnin' Records.[5] On 2 October 2015, he released a remix of Porter Robinson's song titled "Natural Light". The remix became a part of Robinson's Worlds Remixed album.

2016: OWSLA and bitbird

On 26 January 2016, he released a single with Yellow Claw named "Alright" in OWSLA. This was the second song of van Dijck in OWSLA. The song later became a part of a compilation album by OWSLA called OWSLA Worldwide Broadcast.

On 11 March 2016, he released the New Sky EP with a second single and music video on Monstercat called "They Just Haven't Seen It". This, as well as his main single in the EP, became part of Monstercat's 026 - Resistance.

On 5 June 2016, he teased an unreleased song, now named "RAW", which appeared as the background track of the credits in episode 7 of season 3 in the American comedy series Silicon Valley.[6] It was then fully released on 19 July 2016.

On 7 June 2016, he released a single named "Still Looking" on his own label bitbird[7] and will follow that up with another single "Light" on November 22 2016.[8]
