El Salvador has a HDI of 0.695-medium (2nd in Central America, Costa Rica has 1st with 0.740) and a population of est.8,173,402. Though it has the third highest population in Central America, it is the smallest country, with eight million people living in its area of 21,000sq km (13,048sq mi). This document lists all of the fourteen departments of El Salvador in order of the highest to lowest human development index.[1]
