Saint Helena passports are issued to St Helenians, a unique status recognised by the Government of St Helena, and gained through birth, descent, or application.[2] Those holding this status are British Overseas Territories Citizens connected to Saint Helena,[2] formerly known as British Dependent Territories Citizens.

Types

Since 2014 St Helena passports have been biometric, and are therefore printed in the United Kingdom, where appropriate production facilities exist.[3] However, the St Helena passport office has retained facilities to print non-biometric passports,[3] and does so in cases of emergency (notably urgent travel requirements for medical reasons), owing to the time delay in requesting production of passports in the United Kingdom and their transportation to St Helena.

Status

All passports issued through the Government of St Helena (both biometric passports printed in the United Kingdom, and emergency passports produced locally) have the status of British Overseas Territory Citizen passport, as defined by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.[4] As such, they are widely recognised and accepted around the world, but do not carry the privileges or entitlements of European Union membership.
