Sailing the Seas Depends on the Helmsman

"Sailing the Seas Depends on the Helmsman" (Chinese: 《大海航行靠舵手》; pinyin: Dàhǎi hángxíng kào duòshǒu) is the English-language title of a popular Chinese revolutionary song. The song was already quite popular in the 1950s but became a big hit during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).[1]

Lyrics

Traditional Chinese Simplified Chinese Hanyu Pinyin Literal English translation

dàhǎi hángxíng kào duòshǒu,
wànwùshēng zhǎng kào tàiyáng.
yǔlù zīrùn hémiáo zhuàng,
gàn gémìng kào de shì máozédōng sīxiǎng.
yú'ér lí bùkāi shuǐyā,
guā'ér lí bùkāi yāng.
gémìng qúnzhòng lí bùkāi gòngchǎndǎng.
máozédōng sīxiǎng shì bùluò de tàiyáng.

Sailing seas depends on the helmsman,
Life and growth depends on the sun.
Rain and dew nourish the crops,
Making revolution depends on Mao Zedong Thought.
Fish can't leave the water,
Nor melons leave the vines.
The revolutionary masses can't do without the Communist Party.
Mao Zedong Thought is the sun that forever shines.
