SPI Lasers UK Limited are a global manufacturer of industrial CW and pulsed Fiber laser, with headquarters at Hedge End, Southampton.[1][2]

History

SPI Lasers was founded as Southampton Photonics Incorporated (SPI) as a commercial spinoff from the University of Southampton’s Optoelectronics Research Centre and incorporated in December 1996 as SPI Lasers UK Limited.[3] Its first chairman was Professor David Payne, and he led the team to invent the erbium-doped fiber amplifier.[4]

In 2005 SPI Lasers was floated on the London Stock Exchange, and has since become SPI LASERS PLC with its current director being Dr Thomas Fehn.[5] In 2008 the Trumpf group acquired SPI Lasers for approximately $49 million.[6] In 2015, SPI Lasers acquired JK Lasers who were based in Rugby, Warwickshire to benefit from their Multi kW fiber laser platforms as well as improving their vertical integration of components.[7][8]

With a company size of 350 employees, SPI Lasers now operates in 150 countries and has 5 Global Offices located in Southampton (UK), Rugby (UK), Shanghai (China), Santa Clara (USA) & Seoul (Korea).[9] The SPI Lasers manufacturing facilities are located in Southampton & Rugby, England.[10][11]
