Return of the Living Dead (novel)

Return of the Living Dead is a 1978 novel, a direct sequel to George A. Romero's film, Night of the Living Dead, written by John Russo, who was co-writer of the original film.^[1]

A film of the same title was made years after the book was published, although it bears no resemblance to the book.

Plot

The book is set ten years after the original zombie uprising; where the situation has been contained and life is supposedly back to normal. After a horrific school bus crash, the recently dead begin to rise again, to attack and feast on the living.

Film adaptation

Russo wrote the book with the intention of developing it into a movie property. The resultant 1985 film, also titled Return of the Living Dead, abandoned Russo's plot and took a splatstick approach. Nonetheless, the movie has gone on to become a cult film.
