The Pacaya–Samiria National Reserve, located 183 km / 114 miles southwest of Iquitos, is the largest protected area in Peru and the second largest in the Amazon region. With an area of more than 20,000 km², it is rich in biodiversity.
The reserve is triangular shaped by the Marañón and Ucayali rivers in the south, just before their junction which is the origin of the Amazon River.[1] Its main purpose is to preserve the ecosystems of the Omagua Natural Region, and also to promote the sustainable development of the local towns.
