Redcon - Strike Commander (styled as REDCON) is a 2016 real-time strategy video game developed by Hexage. It is inspired by the Japanese anime film Memories.[1]

Gameplay

The player controls a fortress armed with cannons and it is their task to destroy their enemy's fortress. The player controls the soldiers who are the crew of the fortress. The sodiers can repair damaged utility facilities and weapons. Weapons and facilities can be upgraded between levels.[2][1][3]

Story

Redcon is set in a world where World War I never ended. The Empire leads a war against the nation of Krux, led by the traitorous General Kranz. The protagonist of the game is Strike Commander, who is tasked by leading the offensive against Krux.[4]

Strike Commander is given command of a small fortress in a war against Krux. He proves to be a capable leader and defeats Krux in some battles. He eventually defeats Krux units that tried to destroy a dam that would flood Pompeii and kill the General Staff along with Fuhrer Grimm, the leader of empire which would effectively end the war. Strike Commander leads an offensive against Krux even though general Kranz warns he that they are not enemies and mocks him for his naivity to trust the Empire. Strike Commander defeats the Krux army and kills Kranz. Fuhrer Grimm congratulates him for victory but says that the Empire needs a new enemy and labels Strike Commander a traitor. Strike Commander succeeds Kranz as leader of Krux and starts an offensive against the Empire. He defeats all imperial generals and prepares to destroy a dam that would flood Pompeii town and kill Grimm the same way as Kranz tried in the beginning of the game. The ending of the game suggests that Strike Commander will fail the same way as Kranz did and the cycle of perpetual war will never end.

Reception

Redcon has received generally positive reviews from critics. Rob Rich of Gamezebo gave Redcon 4 out of 5 in his review. He praised the game for its visual style and gameplay. Rich likened the game to FTL: Faster Than Light. He criticised lack of tutorial for some features and "lackluster default base layout."[5] Thomas Olson praised the game for its gameplay that gives more challenge than what would be expected from mobile game. He criticised that graphics in Pc version should be more polished. He also praised amount of content that include over 100 missions.[6]

Steve Lichtfield reviewed the Windows Phone version of the game. He praised it, written that he has "never seen such superlative animation and atmosphere in a mobile game." He also praised the gameplay but criticized that "the back story was confusing."[7]
