Radha Modgil

Radha Modgil is a medical doctor and media personality.

Modgil studied at Cambridge University gaining an MA and qualified as a doctor at Imperial College London. She worked for five years in hospital medicine in London and then trained for a further two years to qualify as a GP. Modgil continues to practice as an NHS GP, as well as teaching and working in health promotion.

Modgil is the co-host for BBC Radio 1's The Surgery every Wednesday. She was the resident GP for Live with Gabby on CH5 and also for Newsround CBBC. She appeared as the medical reporter & presenter for The Sex Education Show Ch4 (series 1-5) and Make My Body Younger BBC3 (Series 1-2). She can also regularly be seen reporting on ITV’s This Morning, BBC Breakfast and ITV Tonight, as well as other news channels.

Working across all platforms Modgil contributes to online projects including BBC Headroom (BAFTA Mental Health Media Award), Channel 4 ‘The History of Sexting’ online, BBC Learning – Remove the Taboo – mental health and Smoking cessation advice, BBC City Hospital and ITN News – Swine Flu.

Currently writing for Top of the Pops magazine, Modgil has also been the weekly columnist for Woman’s Own & MSN Lifestyle. She has written for Bliss Magazine Online, Red Magazine, Top Sante, Mail Online. Femail and The Times Educational Supplement.

She has also worked on numerous health promotion campaigns including contraception, fertility, IBS and family planning and has a particular interest in young people’s health. Working with MIND to promote mental well being. She has also worked with British Heart Foundation against childhood obesity. She is a member of the GP Advisory Board for Cancer Research UK. She supports the JDRF charity and does a lot of work to promote diabetes management and research.

Television

Her medical television work has included a variety of topics and channels, focusing on medical reporting, Q&A and advice as well as education series and medical news broadcasting.

Radio broadcasting

Modgil has contributed to several radio stations, most noticeably BBC Radio 1, joining in January 2013 and then becoming the Resident weekly doctor in July 2013 joining Aled Haydn Jones on the programme. It was announced in May 2015 that Gemma Cairney is to take over as co-presenter from Aled Haydn Jones in June 2015.

Online broadcasting

Modgil has contributed to various platforms, especially appealing to younger audiences and covering subjects on contraception, puberty, mental health and sex education, as well as online safety and social media.

Writing

Modgil is currently writing for TOTP magazine monthly and contributes as a freelance writer and commentator for a variety of online and published magazines and websites. She writes on her own website blog.

Health promotion

Modgil supports the JDRF in raising awareness of juvenile diabetes and the importance of research into the causes, as well as management of this for children and how to help families affected by this. She became an ambassador for the JDRF in 2012.

Awards

Modgil was part of the BBC Radio 1 Team that won the MIND 'Making a Difference' Media Award in 2014 which celebrated the whole of Radio 1 and its efforts to impact and raise awareness of mental wellbeing. She also contributed to the BAFTA Awards winning Mental Health Award BBC Headroom site in 2009.
