Plzeň hlavní nádraží (English: Pilsen main railway station, abbreviated Plzeň hl.n.) is the principal railway station in Pilsen, the largest city in western Bohemia. Station was opened in 1862, together with Czech Western Railway from Prague to Pilsen. Station is electrified.

History

The current building of the Pilsen main railway station was opened in 1907. It is art nouveau building designed by Rudolf Štech. Rudolf Štech also co-financed construction of the railway building and due to debt he committed suicide in 1908.

In the spring of 1945 the building was heavily damaged due to bombing of Pilsen by the US Army Air Forces. After World War II building was reconstructed to its original state.

In 50s the building was renamed as Plzeň Gottwaldovo nádraží (English: Pilsen Gottwald's station) to honor of the first Czechoslovak communist president Klement Gottwald. After the Velvet Revolution the station regained its original name.

Since 2000 the building is Czech cultural heritage.[1]

In 2012 the building was reconstructed. In 2013 an underpass for pedestrians was opened.

Local transport

The station is served by tram lines 1 and 2. There are also numerous troleybus lines near the station.
