Petra Collins (born December 21, 1992)[1] is a Canadian artist and photographer from Toronto, Canada.

Early life

Petra grew up in Toronto where she attended Rosedale Heights School of the Arts.[2] It was at Rosedale at the age of 15, Collins began practicing the art of photography.[3] Collins currently attends Ontario College of Art and Design.[2]

Early career

Collins began taking pictures in High School.[2] She met Richard Kern while assisting him on a shoot, and he became her mentor.[2] Simultaneously, Collins became a frequent subject of photographer Ryan McGinley, and would go on to become one of his proteges.[4] Collins began venturing into the art world, appearing in shows that would feature her own work and her curating abilities implementing her art collective, The Ardorous. Around the same time as Collins's success in the art world, her Instagram account was shut-down after the artist chose to post a photo of herself unwaxed in a bikini. She would speak out against the hypocrisy in what was permitted when depicting the female body in an essay for The Huffington Post, which would go viral and become a major feminist moment in 2013.[5]

Art and photography

Collins has been featured and curated over a dozen shows since 2011, spanning from galleries in New York to Miami's Art Basel to shows at San Francisco's Evergold Projects in conjunction with SFAQ.[6] She is mostly known for pioneering a distinct and colorful aesthetic, a signature found in her photographic work.

Collins is a frequent photographer for such publications as Vogue,[7] Purple Magazine, i-D Magazine, Wonderland Magazine, Dazed & Confused, L'Officiel, Elle, and Love Magazine.[8] She has photographed campaigns for brands such as Levi's, Adidas, Cos, Calvin Klein, and Stella McCartney.[8]

In 2016, Collins was named one of Dazed & Calvin Klein's 100 Creatives Shaping Youth Culture[9] and one of Vogue's 40 Creatives To Watch in 2016.[10] Collins was also named one of 30 Artists to Watch by Artsy.[11]

Modeling and acting

In 2014 and 2015, Petra was cast in a supporting role in Amazon's award-winning TV series, Transparent.[12]

Collins has previously been featured as a model in Calvin Klein's campaign.[13]

In 2016, Petra was tapped as one of the new faces of Gucci, walking in their 2016 F/W Fashion Show in Milan.[14] She would go on to star in their 2016 F/W Campaign.[15]

Literary work

Collins made her literary debut with her book "Babe" in 2015, published by Random House, which was an art and photography collection of thirty female artists from around the world.[16]

Process

When shooting photography, Collins exclusively uses 35mm film.[17]

Reception

Collins has been publicized by The National Post, Vice Magazine, CTV[18] and MTV.[1] Collins was considered one of Canada's top 30 young photographers under 30 years of age by Bloun Artinfo.[19] The Toronto Star named Collins in a 2013 year-end retrospective as a "Person to Watch".[3]
