Paul Anthony Sugrue (born 6 November 1960 in Coventry)[1] is an English former professional footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for Manchester City[2] Cardiff City,[3] Middlesbrough,[4] Portsmouth,[5] Northampton Town[6] and Newport County.[7]

Sugrue played non-league football for Nuneaton Borough before a long career in the Football League.[2] He then returned to non-league with Bridgend Town[7] and played for Elo Kuopio in Finland. He had a spell as manager at Nuneaton Borough,[1] and later became vice-chairman of Merthyr Tydfil, taking over managerial duties as well in February 2006.[8][9]

Criminal proceedings

In 2012, Sugrue was one of three men arrested into allegations of fraud regarding £1.6m of government funds that had been given to a company where Sugrue was serving as a director.[10] Sugrue was later banned from serving as a director of any company for six years, along with Mark Aizlewood and two others.[11] In June 2016 Sugrue was charged following an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office [12]
