Barnes graduated from the University of Strathclyde with an Honours Degree in Marketing in 2006. Then in 2011, he graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a master's degree in Multimedia Journalist.[1]

Barnes started his media career at BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in January 2012, where he worked on the football highlights show Late Kick Off - writing, presenting, producing and editing feature packages for the programme.

After five months at the BBC in Leeds, he moved to Sky Sports News Radio as a reporter and producer. In October 2012, he returned to Scotland to work on programmes made by BBC Sport Scotland, including Sportscene.
