Pattoki (Urdu: پتّوكى), is a city in the Kasur District of the Punjab province of Pakistan.[1] It is the headquarters of Pattoki Tehsil, the second biggest city of Kasur District by population, and an administrative subdivision of the district. It is located at 31°1'0N 73°50'60E with an altitude of 186 metres (610 ft).[2] It is the only city in Pakistan that has a big flower market, mainly for roses. The city is known as "The City of Flowers". It is also the birthplace of Muhammad Shahid Nazir (£1 Fish Man).

Location

Pattoki lies on the N-5 National Highway about 80 kilometres (50 mi) away from Lahore, the capital of Punjab Province. It is an important railway station between the Okara District and Lahore.

History

Pattoki is named after a caste of Hindus called Pattwaan. It is a Hindu-Sikh dominated town, famous for its cotton production and was called "The Cotton Queen".[3] After the independence of Pakistan, the cotton industry became weak. The city is still a big trading center for a number of villages attached to it.

The Changa Manga forest is 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) away from Pattoki, and the Ghehlan nurseries are 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) away. Pattoki green market is well known all over the Punjab. Pattoki was declared the "Queen of Flowers" by Queen Elizabeth because of its flower market which used to export flowers all over the world.

Present day Pattoki

Pattoki was raised to the status of Tehsil in the early 1990s. Before, most official business was carried out in Chunian. The total population of Pattoki, including urban and rural areas, is approximately 07 lakh (700,000). However, it is handicapped in many sectors including education, health and other civic facilities. The underground water of Pattoki is not safe to drink but the government provides pure water from Halla which is 20 kilometres (12 mi) away. Most of the area is irrigated by canal water because the local water is saline and unfit for agriculture. Pattoki has become an industrial hub; there are approximately 200 industrial units. These are found on G.T Road, with companies such as Honda Cars, Nishat Group Textile Mills, BBJ Pipe Industries, Aqua Blue, Rafhan Bestfoods, Ashraf Cotton, Pattoki Sugar Mills, Nishat Thermal Power Plants 500 Megawatts, Baloki LNG Power Plant 1200 Megawatts, Ghazi Fabrics International, Wall's ice cream, Martin Dow, Haleeb foods, Shah Taj Textile Mills, Azguard9, Century Paper & Board Mills, and DIN Textile Mills. Pattoki has a large bamboo market including A-One Bamboo Store and Hafiz Bamboo Store which export bamboo all over Pakistan, Afghanistan and China.
