Pathsala (IPA:ˌpɑːθˈsɑːlə) is a town and a town area committee in Barpeta district in the Indian state of Assam.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census Pathsala city is divided into 4 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Pathsala Town Committee has population of 11,242 of which 5,824 are males while 5,418 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.

Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 1040 which is 9.25% of total population of Pathsala (TC). In Pathsala Town Committee, Female Sex Ratio is of 930 against state average of 958. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Pathsala is around 912 compared to Assam state average of 962. Literacy rate of Pathsala city is 92.80% higher than state average of 72.19%. In Pathsala, Male literacy is around 95.25% while female literacy rate is 90.17%.

Pathsala Town Committee has total administration over 2,759 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within Town Committee limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.[2]

Culture

Pathsala is the heritage of theatre in Assam. The mobile theatre groups of Assam have carved a special niche as the mass entertainers in Northeast India. These groups, popularly known as Bhramyaman Theatre arrange shows throughout the Assam and some of its neighbouring states. The groups, having some similarities with the Yatra team of Bengal start a new session from June/July every year. Normally, they start showing their plays from the month August/September and conclude a session in March/April. Every group has its own set of artists and technicians with stages, pandal, other electric and sound equipment, which it carries to the remotest parts of the trouble torn region.

In Pathsala, there are three prominent Bhramyaman groups, Namely The Kohinoor Theatre, The Abahan Theatre and The Nataraj Theatre.

The famous Debadashi Dance, different from its South Indian style, has Pathsala as its home. It is said that Bishnu Prasad Rabha, on seeing it performed, ordered that this dance form must be promoted and spread. Dilip Kakati is the person who is currently training his troupe of girls in his attempt to save this art. Pabindra Deka is MLA of Patacharkuchi constituency.

Education

Pathsala is among the top educational hubs in lower Assam, Producing toppers in both -SEBA and AHSEC Exams [3] [4]

Bajali Higher Secondary School, Estd: 1926 and Bajali College Estd:1955 are the oldest Educational institutions in the area.

Apart from these Govt. funded Institutions, many Private Institutions there which are attracting young talents from all over Assam to come and study in Pathsala.[5]
