Panagudi is a panchayat town in Tirunelveli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Panagudi had a population of 25,444. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Panagudi has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 66%. In Panagudi, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Panagudi is famous for Windmills, Chill &Natural Breeze, Pathini (Natural energy drink from palm trees), Sengal - Brick production in Sengammals and Clay Tiles. Even there are myths that it got the name from the palm trees i.e. due to the surplus palm tress grown here which are known in Tamil as PANAI MARAM, the name PANAGUDI have been derived from PANAIKUDI.

Panagudi has got western ghats(MAHENDRAGIRI) running on its west side and surrounded by chain of mountains. Farms and plantation of various crops, fruits, cashewnuts, mango over this place still emphazise the real old nature which is still being protected and maintained. The Mountains forms a natural waterfall named kuthara paanjan, kani mara thoppu.. which gets water when season favours. The other popular areas in the mountains are kanchi paarai, Kunnimuthu solai, Sengamaal, Iyar thottam.

In the forest one can find Tigers, Elephants, different species of deers including sambar deer, Fox, Indian Wolf, Red dog, beer, rabbits, Porcupine and different species of snakes and birds.

As of 2007, it is very fast developing place, and have a lot projects under hand. Being in the centre of very important industries, a vast development is expected to cover this area. Panaikudi is the postal name or Railway station name.

The town has been becoming a business hub around the area mounted with the various industries such as KKNNP, ISRO, many tile factories, WINDMILLS and so on.

The place is very famous for the wind. This is the main reason for the development of windmills around the place.

A water falls is located in the area which is known to everyone as KUTHIRAPANCHAN, in MAHENDRAGIRI of western ghats just 9 km away from Panagudi Police Station.

Arulmigu Ramalinga Swamy Sivagami Ambal Thirukovil is located in the heart of the town near the Bus stand.

Roman Catholic church is located in the main road.


I am a student of Amrita Vidyalayam who visited this Rama Linga Swamy temple on 26th July 2016 .

It is an area located in the NH7 road of Panagudi. St. Ann's Matric. Hr. Sec. School is located in this area. This school provides the localties with the great educational experience in the town.

Thalavaipuram: It is coming under Panagudi Panchayat, it was a village. Now it’s growing fast in culture as well as economical. In 2001, an English medium school was started in Thalavaipuram namely BHARATH Nursery School in a rented building nearby Thalavaipuram bus stop and was shifted to their own premises on the way to Panagudi.

Cricket, Volleyball, Kabadi and Ball Badminton are the main games being played in panagudi. Panagudi teams are very popular in these games at Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tutucorin districts. Many tournaments are being conducted in these games.

Panagudi gets two monsoons namely South-western monsoon and North-eastern monsoon. In this place, paddy and banana are cultivated. Vazhaithoppu is famous for banana cultivation.
