P739
P739 is the reference number of a standard form used by the UK Royal Mail.
It notifies the recipient of a mail item that could not be delivered.
Uses
The P739 is used if one of the following occurs:
- The item is too large to fit through the letterbox and no-one is available, or
- The item requires a signature and there is no-one available to sign.
- The item has been delivered to an immediate neighbour (New policy introduced on 1 October 2012)
Once a P739 has been delivered, the recipient can either call their local delivery office to have the item redelivered the next day or may take the card and ID to the delivery office for collection. Recent changes mean that the recipient can also request the item to be left in a 'safeplace' such as a garden shed or left with a neighbour. Safeplace instructions must be printed on the item before it's posted: so the addressees instructions have to be captured by the sender and printed on the item. It can currently only be used with certain services.
Details
The card contains the following details, which are completed by the delivery person on a failed delivery attempt:
- The time and date of the attempted delivery.
- The intended recipient's name and address.
- The reason for the card being left.
- Postage Rate: Special Delivery, Recorded Delivery or Tracked.
- The reference number (in the case of trackable items or those requiring a signature).
- Item Type: Parcel, Packet, Catalogue or Letter.
- Other details about the item: Perishable or International item.
- The number or name of the delivery person.
- The delivery office where the parcel can be collected and when it can be collected.
