Ecuador representative democratic republic in South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, by Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. The country also includes the Galápagos Islands (Archipiélago de Colón) in the Pacific, about 965 kilometers (600 mi) west of the mainland. Ecuador straddles the equator, from which it takes its name, and has an area of 256,371 square kilometers (98,985 sq mi). Its capital city is Quito, and its largest city is Guayaquil.

FESTIVITIES: "El Carnaval" This festivity is celebrated three days before Ash Wednesday. What it started as a pagan celebration, it became one of the most celebrated festivities throughout the country. Family and friends gather together for this celebrations. There are parades on the streets of "la sierra" (the highlands) and "la costa" (the coast) People celebrate by throwing water at each other, "carioca" (a nonstaining foam) sprayed at friends or random people. They also celebrate with food, drinks and dances at their homes or outside on their neighborhoods. This is a great festivity that everyone celebrate rich or poor.
