Outbreak Company, known in Japan as Outbreak Company: Moeru Shinryakusha (アウトブレイク・カンパニー 萌える侵略者 Autobureiku Kanpanī: Moeru Shinryakusha, lit. Outbreak Company: The Moe Invader) is a Japanese light novel series written by Ichirō Sakaki, with illustrations by Yūgen. Kodansha has published fifteen volumes since December 2011. A manga adaptation by Kiri Kajiya began serialization in Kodansha's Good! Afternoon in November 2012. An anime television series adaptation aired between October and December 2013.

Plot

Shin'ichi Kanō is a young secluded otaku who is offered a job thanks to his vast knowledge of anime, manga and video games. However, just after meeting his new employer, he is kidnapped, awakening in an alternate world with a fantasy setup. Shin'ichi is then informed that he was in fact selected by the Japanese government to help improve his country's relations with this new world by establishing a company to spread the unique products of the Japanese culture to this new, unexplored market.

Shin'ichi is the protagonist. He decides to look for a job in order to escape the hikikomori lifestyle he had fallen into after entering high school, but as a result he ends up employed in spreading otaku culture for the Holy Eldant Empire. He is a hardcore otaku who is true and honest to his interests.
Myucel Foaran (ミュセル・フォアラン Myuseru Foaran)
Voiced by: Suzuko Mimori (Japanese); Juliet Simmons (English)
Myucel is a half-elf who is Shin'ichi's maid in the Holy Eldant Empire. Having no discrimination at her origins, Shin'ichi quickly befriends Myucel and starts teaching her the Japanese language. In response to his kindness, Myucel eventually falls in love with him and becomes his most trusted supporter. Myucel is a powerful mage who was trained in the Eldant military.
Petralka Anne Eldant III (ペトラルカ・アン・エルダント三世 Petoraruka An Erudanto Sansei)
Voiced by: Mai Fuchigami (Japanese); Kira Vincent-Davis (English)
Despite looking like a child, she is about Shin'ichi's age and is the monarch of the Eldant Empire. She takes an interest in Shin'ichi after seeing how casually he speaks with her and starts visiting him on a regular basis to have him read manga for her which in turn causes her to develop deep feelings for him. Petralka usually complains at Myucel out of jealousy due to her closeness with Shin'ichi and asks him to teach her the Japanese language as well.

Minori Koganuma (古賀沼 美埜里 Koganuma Minori)

A well-endowed member of the JSDF assigned to help Shin'ichi with his task of spreading the otaku culture in Eldant. Minori is also an otaku but unlike him, she is a fujoshi specialized in boys-love merchandise and usually fantasizes about Shin'ichi with Garius becoming a couple.
Elbia Hanaiman (エルビア・ハーナイマン Elbia Hānaiman)
Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka (Japanese); Sara Ornelas (English)
A werewolf, who was suspected as a spy from the neighboring Bahailm Kingdom. She develops a crush on Shin'ichi and once attacked him while in heat because of it. She is entrusted as Shin'ichi's personal artist.
Jinzaburō Matoba (的場 甚三郎 Matoba Jinzaburō)

The man from the Japanese Government who hires Shin'ichi to the task of spreading the Japanese culture in Eldant. However, he only reveals him the true nature of his mission after having him drugged and taken away from Earth.
Garius En Cordbal (ガリウス・エン・コルドバル Gariusu En Korudobaru)
Voiced by: Shinichiro Miki (Japanese); Chris Patton (English)
Petralka's cousin and a knight. His and Petralka's parents fought for the throne which ended with their mutual deaths, leaving Petralka to become a ruler despite being a child. Thanks to Minori's influence, Garius becomes interested in boys-love manga and apparently he has some interest in Shin'ichi.

Light novels

Outbreak Company began as a light novel series written by Ichiro Sakaki, with illustrations by Yūgen. The first novel was published by Kodansha on December 2, 2011, under their imprint Kodansha Ranobe Bunko,[1] and fifteen volumes will have been released as of July 1, 2016.[2] The novels are published in Taiwan by Sharp Point Press.[3]

Manga

A manga adaptation, illustrated by Kiri Kajiya, was serialized in Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine between November 7, 2012, and November 7, 2014.[4][5] The first tankōbon volume was released on September 2, 2013,[6] and three volumes have been released as of June 6, 2014.[7]

Anime

An anime television series adaptation, produced by Feel and directed by Kei Oikawa,[8] aired from October 3 to December 19, 2013, on TBS and later on MBS, CBC, BS-TBS. The anime was simulcasted in North America by Crunchyroll.[9] The opening theme is "Univer Page" (ユニバーページ Yunibā Pēji) by Suzuko Mimori and the ending theme is "Watashi no Hōsekibako" (私の宝石箱) by Mai Fuchigami. Sentai Filmworks acquired the anime series for streaming and home video release,[10] later releasing it on Blu-ray and DVD on March 3, 2015.

Fed up with all the responsibilities piled upon her, Petralka shuts herself in her room and refuses to leave. Shin'ichi, who used to live as a shut-in in Japan, decides then to show her the life he used to have, with all the ups and downs that come from it as well.

When footage from the soccer game leak to the internet in Japan, the government's secret operation in Eldant is at risk of being exposed to the world and Shin'ichi comes with a plan to deceive the public opinion by announcing it as part of a fantasy film production in collaboration with the JSDF, inviting Petralka to play the main role.

Shin'ichi's efforts to spread the Otaku culture bear fruit. However, when there is a shortage of products from Japan, leading to various conflicts amongst the people in Eldant, Shin'ichi learns the true intentions of the Japanese government and falls into despair upon it, until Myucel inspires him to come up with a solution.

In response to Shin'ichi's act of defiance, the Japanese Government orders the JSDF to kill him. After two failed attempts, Shin'ichi comes with a plan to convince the politicians in Tokyo to spare him and keep supporting his efforts to spread the Otaku culture in Eldant instead.
