One Night in Supermarket is a 2009 Chinese comedy film directed and written by Yang Qing. It marks Yang's directorial debut.[1]

Plot

Two young people (Qiao Renliang and Li Xiaolu) are working the night shift at the 24-hour supermarket when mid-aged He Sanshui (Xu Zheng) storms in with stun guns and his doofus cousin (Wang Dongfang). He Sanshui is determined to reclaim his lottery prize that was denied due to a mistake made by the owner. Hilarity ensues when a moronic prankster (Zhao Yingjun), the mean lady boss (Yang Qing, not the director) and an at-large gunman (Zhang Jiayi) enter the mart one after another.

Reception

The film was well received by critics.[2] Derek Elley of Variety calls it a "slickly-made feature debut".[3]

Awards

The film won 2 awards at the China Movie Channel Media Awards held during the 2009 Shanghai International Film Festival. Yang Qing won Favourite Screenwriter and Xu Zheng won Favourite Actor.[2]

At the Locarno International Film Festival in Locarno, Switzerland in 2009, it received special mention for the Netpac Jury Award.[4]
