In the past, Aladdin is shown to be a "Savior" and his enemy, Jafar, tells him he will fall, as all Saviors do. In the present, Mr. Hyde is arrested after bringing in various characters from the Land of Untold Stories. He tells Emma he knows about her recent tremors and visions and sends her to an oracle who shows her a more complete vision of her death. Gold goes into Belle's dreams to wake her from the sleeping curse, where Morpheus tells him he has one hour to wake her or she will remain asleep forever; he tries to get Belle to fall in love with him again, but she does not fall for his lies. This leads Morpheus to reveal that he is actually the son of Belle and Rumple, and he's there to make sure Belle does not reconcile with Gold. She wakes up and leaves Gold. Henry convinces Regina that Hades may have lied about Robin's soul having been fully destroyed. Zelena moves in with Regina but, after learning her sister blames her for Robin Hood's death, moves back into her old house, where the Evil Queen awaits her and insists they talk.

In the pre-first-curse Enchanted Forest, the Evil Queen makes a deal with Edmond Dantes, The Count of Monte Cristo, in which she'll help him seek his revenge in exchange for him killing Snow and David. His decision to back out of the deal after he falls for Snow's handmaiden, as well as Rumple's interference, changes the outcome, at the cost of the handmaiden. In the present day, the Evil Queen begins her plan of vengeance, as she tests Zelena's loyalty and uses Edmond in her plot to carry out the unfinished plan of having Snow and David killed. When Regina kills Edmond to save her friends, the Evil Queen proclaims that Regina is still dark and tells everyone that their untold stories are about to be played out with Regina bringing about their unhappy endings. The Evil Queen later hints to David that his father might have died under mysterious circumstances and makes a deal with Gold not to harm Belle or their child, although Belle, who is staying aboard Hook's ship, has made it clear that she won't return to him. Emma tells Archie about her visions and has suspicions as to why Regina does not appear in them.

However, when Ella sees the prince give a rose to her stepsister Clorinda, she flees the ball, leaving one of her glass slippers behind. Back home, she attempts to use a key her mother owned before her death that leads to the Land of Untold Stories. However, Clorinda stops her and tells her the prince wants to marry Ella, that he gave her a rose to congratulate her on her engagement to Jacob, the footman. Clorinda reveals that she wants to run away with Jacob, so Ella gives her the key to the Land of Untold Stories, insisting that Clorinda's mother will find her otherwise. Unfortunately, Ella's stepmother forces her into revealing Clorinda's location. After Prince Thomas proposes to Ella, she tries to stop her wicked stepmother from hurting Clorinda and Jacob. But, in the end, the wicked stepmother takes Clorinda with her to the Land of Untold Stories, leaving Jacob and Ella behind. The serum will split one person into two personalities and using it leads to the birth of Mr. Hyde. Unfortunately, Jekyll's attempt to win over Lydgate's daughter Mary leads to tragic consequences. In Storybrooke, Gold takes extreme measures to stop Hyde from harming Belle, but it turns out Jekyll is the true villain whose attempt to kill Belle is thwarted by Hook, killing both Jekyll and Hyde. This causes Regina to ask Emma to kill her if necessary, as it may be the only way to stop the Evil Queen, and Gold explains to Belle that she will eventually need him to protect their child. In the meantime, Snow returns to teaching with a new assistant, Shirin, who inspires her to use her past to reach her students. However, it is revealed that Shirin is actually Princess Jasmine and is being assisted by The Oracle in her search for Aladdin.

The two end up handing over their hearts but the Evil Queen decides to return them with a twist, resulting in Snow falling under another sleeping curse. Emma discovers that she can kill the Evil Queen with the sword without hurting Regina. However the Queen uses Aladdin's position as the genie to send Emma to an alternate reality in which she was never the Savior and the Evil Queen was banished long ago. Since Regina is the same person as the Queen, she is able to wish to be put in the alternate reality with Emma where she makes a deal with Rumplestiltskin for his freedom in exchange for a bean to take her and Emma home. She tries to get Emma to remember who she is by masquerading as the Evil Queen and killing Snow and David. Meanwhile in the real world, David wants to end the Queen's reign once and for all and confronts her in the mayor's office. However when she is outnumbered by David, Jasmine, Aladdin, and Hook, she disappears into the streets where the hooded figure that is supposed to kill Emma appears and turns her into a serpent. Jasmine wishes for Aladdin to take them to Agrabah. Blue reveals she was attacked and that the Black Fairy took Gold and Belle's son. The hooded figure confronts Gold and Belle in the pawn shop and is revealed to be the adult version of their son. Finally, in the alternate reality, Emma and Regina are about to use the magic bean to return to Storybrooke when that world's version of Robin Hood comes to rob them. Regina is so distracted when she sees her love that she and Emma miss the portal home.

Production

Development

Executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis announced that they were ending the half-season arc structure that was seen in seasons three through five, with Horowitz saying, "We’re also planning a 22-episode story as opposed to breaking it up into two halves this year. It has been really exciting and fun." Kitsis added: "We are changing around what we’re doing this year and going back to that season 1 mentality of small town stories and smaller arcs."[57] This season will focus on Storybrooke as the main setting,[58] but will also show new realms[59] and there will be the exploration of the Savior's mythology.[60] Kitsis and Horowitz are bringing two Dead of Summer directors over to Once this season; Norman Buckley and Mairzee Almas will helm one and two episodes, respectively.[61] Jennifer Lynch will also be directing an episode this season.[62]

Casting

Horowitz: There certainly are nods to the film that we all love so much, that we're peppering in throughout. We're, right now, focusing on [Aladdin, Jasmine, and Jafar]. Kitsis: Obviously, I don't think we would touch the genie. I would like to see a monkey but I can't promise anything. I think, whereas some stories, like Frozen, we were very faithful to Frozen, I think you will see Aladdin will have its own Once twist.

—Executive producers Kitsis and Horowitz on Once's interpretation of Aladdin.[63]

Emilie de Ravin told fans that she will be returning for the sixth season.[9] It was also announced later that Sam Witwer and Hank Harris have signed a contract to play two new recurring characters on the sixth season of the show.[64] On March 29, 2016, Lana Parrilla confirmed she would be returning for the sixth season.[6] Robert Carlyle was confirmed to be returning for the sixth season as Rumplestiltskin[13] along with Rebecca Mader as Zelena[12] and Jared Gilmore as Henry Mills.[11]

It was announced that Giles Matthey was cast as Morpheus, who is slated to appear in the first episode of the season.[34] On July 20, it was announced that Craig Horner would be portraying the Count of Monte Cristo, who will be introduced in the second episode of the season.[35] At the 2016 San Diego Comic Con International it was revealed that the season would see the introduction of Aladdin (Deniz Akdeniz), and his story featuring the return of Jafar, now portrayed by Oded Fehr (the role had been previously played by Naveen Andrews on Once Upon a Time in Wonderland). Andrews was unavailable due to his previous commitment to Netflix's Sense8.[27] It was also announced that Galavant's Karen David was cast as Princess Jasmine. She will make her debut in the fourth episode of the season.[28]

In early July, it was announced that Raphael Sbarge will be reprising his role as Jiminy Cricket / Dr. Archie Hopper in the season premiere. The character's last appearance was in the season 4 episode "Rocky Road."[15] On July 20, it was announced that Jessy Schram would be reprising her role as Cinderella in the third episode of the season. The episode will explore a connection that her character has to someone from the Land of Untold Stories, as well as the start of her friendship with Snow White.[22] That same episode will also introduce Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters.[65] David Anders will return this season as Victor Frankenstein. The character will have a connection with Jekyll and Hyde.[21] On August 15, it was announced that Jonny Coyne would be reprising his role as Dr. Lydgate from Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, in the fourth episode of the season.[37] On August 26, it was announced that Faran Tahir was cast as Captain Nemo, and would have ties to Captain Hook.[39] On September 22, it was announced that Tzi Ma will be reprising his role as the Dragon sometime in the season.[30] Gabrielle Rose will also be returning as David's mother, Ruth, who will appear via flashback in episode 7.[31] On September 27, it was announced that Sean Maguire will be returning as Robin Hood. The former main character, who died on-screen near the end of season 5, will not be brought back from the dead but will appear in a multi-episode arc in a different capacity.[25] Wil Traval will be returning at some point during the season, as The Sheriff of Nottingham.[32] On October 31, it was announced that Mckenna Grace would be returning as a younger version of Emma.[43]
