North Oakland is an area in Oakland, California, bordered by West Oakland, Downtown Oakland, Oakland Hills and the adjacent cities of Berkeley, Emeryville and Piedmont. Annexed to Oakland in 1897,[1] it is known as the birthplace of the Black Panther Party and is the childhood home of both Dr. Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale.[2] It is also the birthplace and childhood home of Sue Draheim, internationally recognized fiddler.
Today North Oakland has a population of roughly 20,000. Some areas of North Oakland have seen major gentrification. While this recent gentrification has led to the exodus and/or forcing out of many African-Americans, as of the 2010 census Blacks still form a majority of the residents of the western half of North Oakland, at 52%.[3]
