Newton Ogilvie Thompson
Newton Ogilvie Thompson (27 May 1904 to 1 July 1992)[1] was Chief Justice of South Africa 1971–1974[2]
Thompson was educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown[3] and later at the University of Cape Town where obtained a B.A and LL.B. (with distinction).
He practised as a lawyer in Cape Town from 1926 and became an advocate in 1944 and was elevated to the bench in 1949. He became a judge of appeal in 1958 and served as Chief Justice from 1971 to 1974.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Rhodes University in 1972.[4]
He died in Kenilworth, Cape Town in 1992.
