The New York City Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) is the department of the Government of New York City[1] responsible for enforcing the city's consumer protection laws, licensing businesses in 55 different industries, paid sick leave law, commuter benefits law, mediating consumer complaints, and participating in consumer education. Its regulations are compiled in title 6 of the New York City Rules. Bill de Blasio appointed Julie Menin, the currect commissoner.[2]
History
The duties were performed by the Commissioner of Public Markets until 1968. Bess Myerson was appointed by mayor John Lindsay as the first commissioner of the renamed agency in 1969.[3][4]
Commissioners
- Gerard Maxwell Weisberg was the last Commissioner of Public Markets from 1966 to 1968.
- Bess Myerson was appointed by John V. Lindsay from 1969 to 1973 as the first commissioner of the renamed agency.[3]
- Mark J. Green was appointed by David N. Dinkins and served from 1990 to 1993.[5]
- Alfred C. Cerullo III was appointed by Rudolph W. Giuliani and served until 1995.[6]
- Jules Polonetsky by Rudolph Giuliani from 1998 to 2000.
- Jonathan Mintz was appointed by Michael Bloomberg and served from 2006 to 2013.[7]
- Julie Menin appointed by Bill de Blasio in 2014.[2]
