Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (Japanese: ニュー ダンガンロンパV3 みんなのコロシアイ新学期 Hepburn: Nyū Danganronpa V3: Minna no Koroshiai Shingakki, lit. "New Danganronpa V3: Everyone's New Semester of Mutual Killing") is an upcoming visual novel adventure video game in development by Spike Chunsoft for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. It is the third main title in the Danganronpa series and the first in the franchise to be developed for home consoles. The game is planned to be released in Japan on January 12, 2017 and will be published in North America and Europe by NIS America in 2017.

Overview

Moving away from the setting of Hope's Peak Academy featured in previous games, Danganronpa V3 takes place at a prison school known as "Gifted Inmates Academy" (才囚学園 Sai-shū Gakuen). Players take control of Ultimate Pianist Kaede Akamatsu who, along with several other Ultimate inmates, has become trapped inside the school by the evil Monokuma and forced to participate in a mutual killing game.[1][2][3]

The game continues the same style of gameplay as the first two Danganronpa games, in which the player must participate in Class Trials to determine who among their fellow students murdered one of their own.[4] In addition to the previous mechanic of using Truth Bullets containing evidence to shoot through contradictions that come up during discussions, the player will occasionally need to use lies in order to defeat opponents.[2] The game features updates to the Nonstop Debates, in which players may have to listen to multiple testimonies at once.[5]

Development

Danganronpa V3 is produced by Yoshinori Terasawa, and planned and written by Kazutaka Kodaka,[1] while the character design is done by Rui Komatsuzaki.[6] The game is being developed at the same time as the production of the anime series Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School, which Terasawa and Kodaka described as being difficult; they still try to develop both projects without making any compromises, as such an opportunity does not arise often. The "V3" in the game's title was chosen to differentiate it from the anime; the "V" is short for "Victory". Terasawa and Kodaka described the game's production level as being much higher than that of previous games in the series.[7]

There was division among the staff in the development team regarding whether the game should be a sequel or something new; because of this, it was decided to make something that was both a sequel and new.[7] The game's theme is described as "psycho-cool".[2]

Promotion and release

The existence of a third Danganronpa title was first teased in September 2013 with the announcement of Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls.[8] In March 2015, Kodaka revealed that Danganronpa 3 was in early development.[9][10] The game was officially announced on September 14, 2015 at Sony's Tokyo Game Show presentation.[11]

The game is planned to be released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in January 12, 2017 in Japan. The limited edition of the game will include an original video animation based on Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, titled Super Danganronpa 2.5: Komaeda Nagito to Sekai no Hakaisha.[12] A representative for NIS America stated that they would like to publish the game in the West if given the opportunity.[13]
