Nanak Shah Fakir is a 2015 film on the life and teachings of the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev.[1] It has been produced by Harinder S. Sikka, and has been co-produced by Resul Pookutty and Samar Sikka under the banner of M/S Gurbani Media Pvt Ltd. Academy award winners Resul Pookutty and AR Rahman have designed the sound and mentored the original score of the film respectively. The original score of the film has been composed by renowned Hollywood composer Tuomas Kantelinen. The music of the film has been composed by Uttam Singh. The songs (shabads) have been sung by Pt. Jasraj, Bhai Nirmal Singh Khalsa and Puneet Sikka. The film has been highly appreciated at the Cannes Films Festival market 2014, at Toronto (Oct 2014) and LA (Nov 2014) as well as by the viewers through its worldwide release on 17 April 2015.

Controversy

The movie is facing criticism after release of trailers for depicting Guru Nanak[2] which is not true as Computer graphic are used to depict Guru Nanak Dev Ji though the other characters are not shown animated which is offensive according to Sikhs . Sikh group Dal Khalsa warn against release of movie.[3] Damdami Taksal also submit memo to Akal Takht jathedar against film.[4]

The movie had courted another controversy after Sartaj Singh Pannu, Director of Nanak Shah Fakir moved the Delhi High Court against producers Harinder Singh Sikka and Oscar-winning sound artiste Resul Pookutty. Sartaj Singh Pannu, in his petition, reportedly maintained that he had worked on the project as the film director. Based on the Court Order in O.M.P. 1602 of 2014 dated 22nd May 2015, pronounced by the Hon'ble High Court of New Delhi at New Delhi, it was decided that

“The Court is of the view that Pannu has been unable to make a prima facie case that he should be given credit, even at this stage, as the sold Director of the film "Nanak Shah Fakir". Further, the balance of convenience in granting such interim relief also does not appear to be in his favour. If Pannu succeeds ultimately in showing that he was wrongly denied credit, his plea for the alternate relief of damages can be considered at that stage. Consequently, the Court is unable to grant Pannu any of the interim reliefs as prayed for at this stage”.
