Naji al Jurf

Naji al-Jerf (in Arabic, ناجي الجرف) (died 27 December 2015) was a Syrian journalist,^[1] editor, director, and activist,^[2] probably born in or around 1977.^[3] Committed to being against both the Syrian regime and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), al-Jerf was killed on 27 December 2015 in Gaziantep, Turkey, at the age of 38.^[4][5][6]

Biography

Naji al-Jerf was the director of the monthly magazine Hentah, and a leader in the activist group Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently.^[7] Raqqa had become the capital of the Islamic State. Naji al-Jerf published the documentary ISIL in Aleppo on 15 December 2015,^{[8] [9][10]} which showed atrocities being committed by an Islamic State official in Aleppo.^[11] The documentary was posted on YouTube, where it had over 75,000 views as of 31 December 2015.^[12]

Assassination attempts

Naji al-Jerf has escaped several assassination attempts. Turkish security services have failed on two, one of them by defusing an explosive under his car.

Assassination

Naji al-Jerf was assassinated on 27 December 2015 by a gunman with a silencer, in the center of Gaziantep, after having obtained his Visa, and preparing to emigrate to France via Turkish Airlines.

Daesh (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the murder that very night. This organization also claimed responsibility for the murder of two of his colleagues, beheaded in early November 2015 in Şanliurfa, Turkey. ^[13]
