Nagore Esmail Mohammed Hanifa (25 December 1925 - 8 April 2015) was a Tamil Muslim politician and also a playback singer.[1][2] He was member of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, known as "Isai Murasu"[3] (இசை முரசு) which means musical drum. He is given that name, since his voice so clear and attracts the crowd.

Politics and films

Nagore Hanifa sang so many Muslim Ddevotional songs which are widely used in Tamil Nadu, during festivals and marriages. During the 1950s the songs which he sang for Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam boosted the fortunes of this party. "Oadi varugiran Udhayasooriyan", "Kallakkudi konda Karunanidhi vaazhgave", "Nee engae senrai Anna" and "Azhaikkinrar Anna" are the famous songs sung by him is still used by the DMK for their party morale.[3] He was one among the leading propagandist of DMK for past half century.[4] He was also a film playback singer. Some of the songs are "Yellorum Kondaduvom" along with T. M. Soundararajan in Paava Mannippu, ‘Un mathama’ in Raman Abdullah and also in Sembaruthi. Iraivanidam Kaiyenthungal is very well known song from him among all the Tamils,[2] though it is a Muslim devotional song.

During the 1970s, he was the member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Council, which is defunct now.[5][6] He died on 8 April 2015, aged 89.[1]
