Mute is an upcoming science fiction mystery thriller directed by Duncan Jones, who also co-wrote the script with Michael Robert Johnson and Damon Peoples. It will star Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux.

The film has been described by Jones as a "spirtual sequel" to his 2009 film Moon.[1][2]

Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West. Leo Beiler, a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and she's disappeared. But when Leo's search takes him deeper into the city's underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo can't tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.

On November 2015, Jones announced his next film after Warcraft will be the science fiction thriller Mute, starring Alexander Skarsgård and Paul Rudd. Jones had been developing the project for many years and has described it as a "spiritual sequel" to Moon, heavily inspired by the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner.[3] Jones confirmed on May 30, 2016 that filming is intended to begin at the end of 2016 in Berlin,[4] which was again confirmed on his personal twitter where he showcased some concept art from the film.[5] Jones announced on his Twitter that filming would begin on September 28, 2016.[6] Liberty Films UK confirmed that principal photography had begun that day.[7] On September 29, 2016, it was confirmed that Netflix will distribute the film online with a limited theatrical release.[8] Gary Shaw, who worked with Jones on Moon, will serve as cinematographer on the project.[9] On October 11, 2016, Justin Theroux joined the cast.[10]

On October 12, 2016, it was revealed that Netflix plans to release the film in 2017.[11]

Clint Mansell will compose the film's score.[12]
