Muneer Abdul-Munim Al-Ali

Muneer Al-Ali, urological and transplantation surgeon, was born (18 May 1944) in Al-Hindiya , a central Iraqi town situated between Karbala and Al-Hilla. He is a member of the Al-Ali, an offshoot of Bani Malik tribe. He attended school in Al-Hindiya until 1951,when he moved to Baghdad where he lived until he migrated out of Iraq in 1994. Al-Ali received M.B.,Ch.B. degree (bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery) at the Medical College, Baghdad University, in 1966. He received the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh(FRCS) in 1974. He has also shown interest in Arabic ethnopharmacology. He is also interested in History and Spirituality and the interplay between faith and science, to which he has contributed .

Personal life

Al-Ali was married to Zahra Witwit, with whom he has two sons; Firas and Wisam and a daughter; Asil, and after she died he got married to Widad Witwit. In 1994, he left Iraq with his family to Jordan then to Libya until 1997, when officially migrated to New Zealand, then to UK in 1999 where he settled.

Medical career

In 1975, he was appointed as consultant surgeon at Erbil Military Hospital, Iraq and moved in 1976 to Al-Rasheed Military Teaching Hospital as a consultant urological and transplantation surgeon at the Urology & Transplantation Dept. and then as head of the department until he migrated in 1994. He is one of the pioneers of kidney transplantation in the Arab world in the early seventies of the last century . He innovated several urological operations for the treatment of challenging urological diseases and injuries involving the kidney and urinary tract viz. kidney autotransplantation for complicated overlooked injuries of the ureter, staged total urethroplasty for complex urethral injuries, optical urethroplasty for long urethral occlusions, and posterior trans-sphincteric anterior rectal wall advancement(TSARA) for complicated recto- urethral fistulae, optical procedures for the rehabilitation of the neuropathic bladder. He left Iraq in 1994 and had since held the post of consultant urologist ± transplant surgeon at the following hospitals in various countries mostly in UK, as follows:
