Miss World 2001, the 51st edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 16 November 2001 at the Super Bowl of Sun City Entertainment Centre in Sun City, South Africa.[2] 93 contestants from all over the world competed for the title. Agbani Darego from Nigeria won the pageant.[3] She was crowned by Priyanka Chopra of India. This is the first time Nigeria won the pageant.

The Miss World 2001 contest was expecting 107 delegates from around the planet to compete in the 51st version of the pageant; however due September 11 attacks, added to economic and other matters, were responsible for several delegates not showing up.[4]

Withdrawals

The Bahamas Bahamas - Miss Teen Bahamas 2001, Kiara Sherman had to cancel her participation in Miss World 2001 due lack of time and preparation, and because she wasn't the official Bahamas's official National Pageant winner.[5] However 8 years later, she represented Bahamas at Miss Universe 2009.

Curaçao Curaçao - Also pulled out due to economic problems.

 Egypt - Miss Egypt World 2001, Sally Shaheen did not participate in Miss World 2001 as scheduled due the instability of Middle East following the terrorist September 11 attacks in New York , she later participated in Miss Universe 2002.[6]

Kazakhstan Kazakhstan - Miss Kazakhstan 2001, Gulmira Makhambetova did not compete for unknown reasons.[7]

Lithuania Lithuania - Did not compete because of a scheduling conflict with Miss Lithuania 2001 contest, which was held 7 days before Miss World 2001 finals.[8]

Moldova Moldova - Miss Moldova 2001, Nadezhda Corcimari was supposed to participate in Miss World 2001 but due her young age, Miss World officials refused her participation.[9] No runner ups from Miss Moldova 2001 pageant were sent for Miss World 2001 due the same reazon.

Nepal Nepal - No contest was held in 2001 due the Nepalese royal massacre occurred at mid-year.

Seychelles Seychelles and Zambia Zambia - Not held contest.

 Swaziland - Miss Swaziland 2001, Glenda Mabuza was expected to compete, but the local organizers could not reach to an agreement over the franchise[10]

Uzbekistan Uzbekistan - Miss Uzbekistan 2001, Olesya Loshkareva had to cancel her participation in the Miss World 2001 due security reasons following the terrorist September 11 attacks in New York. However Uzbekistan finally did their debut 12 later, at Miss World 2013.[11]

Belarus Belarus, Chinese Taipei Chinese Taipei , Denmark Denmark, Guatemala Guatemala, Honduras Honduras, Paraguay Paraguay , and Sri Lanka Sri Lanka [12] - did not compete for unknown reasons.
