Miss Sloane is a 2016 French-American political thriller film directed by John Madden from a script by Jonathan Perera. The film stars Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Stuhlbarg, Alison Pill, Jake Lacy, John Lithgow and Sam Waterston.

The film had its world premiere on November 11, 2016 at the AFI Fest and was released in the United States on November 25, 2016 by EuropaCorp, and is scheduled to be released in France on March 8, 2017.

Premise

In the high-stakes world of political power-brokers, Elizabeth Sloane (Jessica Chastain) is the most sought after and formidable lobbyist in D.C. Known equally for her cunning and her track record of success, she has always done whatever is required to win. But when she takes on the most powerful opponent of her career, "The Gun Lobby", she finds that winning may come at too high a price.

Cast

Production

In September 2015, it was announced that Jessica Chastain had been cast in the film, with John Madden directing the film from a screenplay by Jonathan Perera. Ben Browning would produce under his FilmNation Entertainment banner and Patrick Chu would executive produce, while EuropaCorp would handle worldwide distribution, produce, and finance the film.[4] In January 2016, it was announced that Alison Pill had joined the cast of the film.[5] That same month, Jake Lacy and Gugu Mbatha-Raw joined the cast of the film.[6][7] In February 2016, Douglas Smith, Mark Strong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sam Waterston, John Lithgow, and Enis Esmer joined the cast.[8][9][10] In March 2016, Meghann Fahy joined the cast of the film.[11] Max Richter composed the film's score.[12]

Filming

Principal photography began on February 12, 2016, in Toronto.[13][14] In March 2016, Jessica Chastain was spotted on set filming.[15] Production wrapped in Toronto on March 30, 2016.[16] In April 2016, additional shooting took place in Washington, D.C..[17][18] Principal photography concluded on April 6, 2016.[19]

Release

In August 2016, two images of Chastain were released.[20][21] The film had its world premiere at the AFI Fest on November 11, 2016.[22] It will also screen at the Napa Valley Film Festival on November 13, 2016.[23] The film was originally scheduled to be released on December 9, 2016.[24] It was later moved up to November 25.[25]

Critical response

Miss Sloane received mixed to positive reviews from critics. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 63%, based on 40 reviews, with an average rating of 6.2/10. The site's critical consensus reads,"Miss Sloane sits squarely on the shoulder's of Jessica Chastain's performance – and she responds with awards-worthy work that single-handedly elevates the film."[26] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 65 out of 100, based on 21 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[27]
