Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford

The Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS) is a research center at Stanford University (specifically, it is part of the Stanford School of Medicine) that aims to undertake "rigorous evaluation of research practices and find ways to optimize the reproducibility and efficiency of scientific investigations."[1] It is headed by John Ioannidis and Steven Goodman.[2] Its initial funding has been via a $6 million grant from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation.[3]

History

A blog post by charity evaluator and effective altruism organization GiveWell suggested that GiveWell played an important role in connecting Steven Goodman (a founding director of METRICS) with Stuart Buck of the Laura and John Arnold Foundation. LJAF would later be the inaugural funder for METRICS with a $6 million grant.[4]

The forthcoming launch of METRICS was announced in March 2014 in The Economist and Horizons magazine.[5][6] The official launch announcement, along with an announcement of the grant from the Arnold Foundation was made on April 22, 2014 on the website of the Stanford School of Medicine.[3][7][4]
