Mercedes Rosalba Aráoz Fernández (Lima, 5 August 1961) is a Peruvian economist, professor, and politician. She served as Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism from 2006[1] to July 2009,[2] after which she was appointed Peru's finance minister.
In April 2016, Aráoz was elected as Congresswoman for 2016-2021. In June 2016, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was elected as President of Peru and Aráoz as the second vice president.
Early life and education
Aráoz was born in Lima. She attended to St. Mary's School in Magdalena del Mar, Lima
Aráoz studied economics at the University of the Pacific in Lima. Later she obtained a Master in Economics and completed her PhD in Economics at the University of Miami.[3][4]
Academic career
She is Associate Professor of International Economy at the Universidad del Pacífico and member of the Research Center. She is also professor at the Diplomat Academy of Peru.
She has worked as a consultant with a variety of international organizations including the World Bank, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the CAF - Development Bank of Latin America.[5]
Minister (2006-2010)
Foreign Trade and Tourism (2006-2009)
On July 28, 2006, Aráoz was named as Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism.
Economy (2009-2010)
Aráoz agreed to be the presidential candidate of the Peruvian Aprista Party (APRA) for the 2011 presidential elections. However, she withdrew her candidacy on January 16 of that year, and the APRA party did not field any candidate.
Congresswoman and Vice president
In the 2016 general election, Aráoz runs with the Peruvians for Change party as candidate both for Congress and for second vice president as running mate of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.[6]
