The Route 17 designation was used in 1933 from Great Barrington to the New York border. In 1939, the route was extended east and renumbered as Route 23. However, a 17 still appeared on the map near West Otis. In 1942, Route 17 was cancelled. The Route 17 designation was last used in the 1950s north of Danvers. At that time, what is now the Interstate 95 freeway (north of what is now Exit 50) carried the U.S. 1 designation, and the old U.S. 1 was numbered Route 17. Once the freeway received the I-95 designation, the old U.S. 1 route was restored.
