The Martin J. Whitman School of Management is the business school of Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. Named after Martin J. Whitman, an alumnus and benefactor of the school, the school was established in 1919. The Whitman School offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees as well as executive degree programs.

History

The school was established at Syracuse University in 1919 as the College of Business Administration. By 1920, the school was the 16th school in the United States to receive accreditation from Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

In 1948, the MBA program was established as the Army Comptrollership Program.[1] After a major donation from 1949 graduate Martin J. Whitman in June 2003, a new state-of-the-art building was constructed and the university renamed the School of Management after him.[1]

MBA program

The Whitman MBA program may be completed three different ways:

Atrium

Traditional 2-year program The full-time MBA program comprises a curriculum of 54 credits. During the summer between the first and second academic years, students complete a four-month internship or participate in special international internships co-sponsored by Syracuse University Abroad.

MBA@Syracuse The MBA@Syracuse is Syracuse University's limited-residency distance learning program for executive students. The program features the same curriculum and faculty as the full-time MBA program at Syracuse.

Accelerated MBA Seasoned business professionals with four or more years of full-time work experience who have an undergraduate degree in business from an AACSB International-accredited institution may take advantage of this streamlined 36-credit alternative to the traditional full-time Syracuse MBA program. The accelerated program is available only on a full-time basis.

Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV)

The Whitman School of Management in 2007 launched a program that offers experiential training in entrepreneurship and management to post-9/11 veterans who incurred disabilities as a result of their service to their country.[5] The program is structured in 3 phases. The first phase includes a self-study curriculum phase that is facilitated by an online discussion and various assessment modules. The second phase exposes delegates to the "nuts and bolts" of business ownership through various workshops and lessons from world-class faculty. The 3rd and last phase includes on-going support to the delegates from faculty experts.[5] The EBV program, although founded at Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management, also extends to several other Universities such as the Florida State University, University of Connecticut School of Business, UCLA Anderson School of Management, Mays Business School, Purdue University, Louisiana State University, Cornell University, and St. Joseph's University.

Panasci Business Plan Competition

The Whitman Business Plan Contest (formerly known as the Panasci Business Plan Competition) is sponsored by the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship and made possible by long supporter of the Whitman School of Management, Henry A Panasci. The contest is a campus-wide student competition that allows teams that choose to take part to launch their own venture. Teams taking part in the competition must submit their own work and ideas. The Department of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises commits to helping students during the process to support and enhance their plans. Prize money comes in different amounts and are awarded to the top three teams in the competition. The first-place team wins the amount of $25,000. The 2nd-place team wins $10,000 and the 3rd-place team wins $5,000. All winners must submit corporate documents and request prize money by December 31. The top three teams are the teams which judges view as having the best potential for growth and attracting outside funding. The Fetner prize is awarded to the business that has the greatest potential for positive impact on society and the natural environment and pays recognition to those runners-up that exhibit the interconnectedness of economic, environmental and social considerations.
