The Manchester Metros are the ice and inline hockey teams for Manchester Universities, including the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

The ice hockey section has teams competing in Checking Divisions 1 and 2 and Non-Checking Division 1 North of the British Universities Ice Hockey Association cup competition. The squads train at the Altrincham Ice Dome and play their cup competition and challenge games at Deeside Ice Rink.

History

Foundation

The Metros were formed as an inline hockey team in 2001 by a group of students studying at UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester (commonly known as Manchester University until 2004). They first competed in the University roller hockey national championships in the 2002-2003 academic year, finishing 4th overall. For the 2003-2004 season the team entered the NIHL, allowing them to play regular matches throughout the year.

In 2004 the club had their debut as an ice hockey team in the BUIHA cup competition. They have continued to field a team in the National Inline Hockey League (NIHL) which is based in Broughton near Salford.

2004-08

The club entered only an A team into the BUIHA Cup Competition.

2008-09 Season

In this season the A team won BUIHA Division 2 Central in convincing fashion going undefeated throughout. The A team also won the Tier II National Championship. The B team played their first season in the cup competition, finishing 2nd in Division 3 North.

2009-10 Season

In this season, the A team again won BUIHA Division 2 Central, and then won the Division 2 play-off final in Sheffield. They then won the Tier II National Championship for the second time. The B team moved up to compete in Division 2 North, where they lost all their games.

2010-11 Season

In this season, the A team moved up to compete in BUIHA Division 1 North, and the B team continued to play in Division 2 North. The A team reached the final of the BUIHA Tier I National Championship. The club also entered a C team into the BUIHA Tier III National Championship.

2011-12 Season

This season saw further expansion and development of the team, with large influx of beginners and a few more ENL level players. Teams were entered into all three divisions of the BUIHA cup competition. In April, a fourth team was entered into the third tier of the national championships weekends.
