Early life and background

Mahira Khan was born on December 21, 1984[1] into a Muslim family in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. In an online interview with Reham Khan, she said that her parents are Urdu-speaking Pathans. Her father, Hafeez Khan, was born in Delhi during the British Raj, and migrated to Pakistan after the partition of India. She has a younger brother, Hasan Khan. Among schools, she attended the Foundation Public School, from where she completed her A'Level. After graduating from Foundation, she, at the age of seventeen, moved to California, United States, for higher education.[12] Khan was the first women in her family to go out of the country alone. Though, she later admitted that living in the United States on her own helped her become "strong and independent." Khan enrolled herself at the University of Southern California for a bachelor's degree in English literature; during this period, she worked as a part-time waitress in a restaurant. However, after completing her first year, Khan decided to pursue her interest to become an actress, and quit her university education.

While living in the United States, her friend Ali Askari, introduced her to a reality show director, who selected her for the show Most Wanted, that aired on MTV in 2006. She then featured as a presenter for the Aag TV's reality show Weekends with Mahira (2008). The show proved to be a major hit and became immensely popular among the audience.[12] Her appearance in the show attracted the attention of filmmaker Shoaib Mansoor, who remembered her, and later in 2010 offered her a role in his film Bol (2011), which she accepted.

Career

Khan began her career as a VJ when she was 16 years old. She worked as a VJ on Most Wanted on MTV Pakistan and Weekends with Mahira on Aag TV.

In 2011, Khan made her film debut in Bol, directed by Shoaib Mansoor.[13] The same year, she acted in her first television drama, ARY Digital's romance Neeyat.[12] She next appeared in the television program Humsafar. Her other dramas include the 2013 spiritual romance Shehr-e-Zaat and the 2014 romantic drama Sadqay Tumhare. She played a starring role in a romantic drama, Bin Roye (2015), a supporting role in the biographical drama Manto,[14] and a leading role in coming-of-age drama Ho Mann Jahaan (2016), all of which rank among the highest-grossing Pakistani films.[15][16][17][18] Khan also had worked in Rahul Dholakia's upcoming Raees,[19][20] which will mark her Bollywood debut. Khan will play the lead character in Shoaib Mansoor's upcoming 2017 social drama film Verna.[21]

Khan was listed tenth in a 'Sexiest Asian Women' poll by Eastern Eye in 2015;[8][22][23] she was also called Pakistan's sexiest woman in 2015.[24][6]

Personal life

While living in the United States, Khan met her future husband, Ali Askari in 2006. The following year, Khan moved back to Karachi and married Askari.[9] They later had a son, Azlaan. The couple separated in 2014 and their divorce was finalized in 2015.
