In fiction

In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, after Guan Yu was killed by Sun Quan, Ma Zhong was awarded Guan Yu's steed, the Red Hare, for his performance in the battle for Jing Province. However, because the Red Hare had been tamed by Guan Yu, it starved itself to death to join its previous master.

After hearing that Liu Bei was planning to attack Eastern Wu to avenge Guan Yu, Ma Zhong began getting his troops ready for the battle with Liu Bei. In one of the skirmishes before the Battle of Xiaoting, Ma killed the Shu Han general Huang Zhong with an arrow. Ma was killed by Mi Fang and Fu Shiren, two defectors from Shu Han.
