History

Memorial board of Andrey Tikhonov on the building of MSU Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics

A group of professors and scholars from Department of Physics and Department of Mechanics and Mathematics led by Andrey Tikhonov founded CMC in 1970. The three departments are still closely connected.

Perhaps, Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science would be a more precise name for this one. The word cybernetics historically refers to what Norbert Wiener introduced in his book Cybernetics, or Control and Communication in the Animal and Machine (1948). In the Soviet Union cybernetics was initially considered antiscientific, and was prohibited. However, in 1960s more liberal scientific views were adopted, triggering a remarkable boom in research and education. That was later reflected in the name of this department founded in 1970. Since that time the CMC name became a well-recognized brand and is unlikely to change.

Scientific laboratories

The faculty includes 18 research laboratories:

The faculty includes 3 laboratories [4][5][6] that support the scientific-educational process and 2 student laboratories.[7][8]

Staff

Faculty staff consists of more than 550 professors and research scientists. There are about 2200 students and 200 post-graduate students. Each year more than 500 students are accepted. As most departments of the MSU are, CMC is quite prestigious, number of applications can reach up to ten per place.

Prominent scientists have worked and are working at the faculty in different years:

Industrial Contacts

Following companies work with CS MSU: Intel, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Borland, Software AG, Siemens, IBM/Lotus, Samsung, HP.

Following laboratories were created with international companies:

IBM Blue Gene/P

Since 2008 CMC also has an IBM supercomputer that is available for research students from different departments.[9] It was ranked number 12 by Top500 in November, 2009.[10]
