In 1460 the Despotate of the Morea conquered by the Ottomans and by 1500 most of the plains and islands of Greece were in Ottoman hands, but not all, for example Rhodes conquered in 1522, Cyprus in 1571, Venetians retained Crete until 1669, the Ionian islands were only briefly ruled by the Ottomans, and remained primarily under the rule of the Republic of Venice.
